A Brief History of Nizwa Fort

Built in the seventeenth century by Imam Sultan bin Saif al-Yarubi, the Nizwa Fort stands as a symbol of the Sultanate's strength and resistance. It took twelve years to build and played a pivotal role in the expulsion of the Portuguese from Oman, making it an important landmark in Oman's independence. As the seat of imams and a center of administration, the fort not only served military purposes, but also played an active role in governance during a time when Nizwa was a major center of trade, religion, and politics.

Architectural characteristics of Nizwa Fort

The most striking feature of the castle is its huge circular tower that can be seen from hundreds of meters away, rising from 34 to 36 meters with a diameter of 45 meters, dominating the city skyline. This round tower served as the city's central defensive structure, housing 24 cannons capable of repelling invaders via 480 firearms outlets. In addition to its thick mud-brick walls, the fort is equipped with complex defense mechanisms such as booby-trapped doors, floor traps and wall openings for throwing arrows. The fort is divided into two main parts: a palace used for residential and administrative purposes and a castle built for defense.
